Silver Star's newest ski-in/ski-out neighbourhood, Alpine Meadows, sold out in record time today just hours after it went on sale at the resort Saturday, March 4th at 11:00 am (PST) . "Alpine Meadows , a 49 lot subdivision, to be constructed next to the original day lodge and at the foot of Christmas Bowl, has been highly anticipated" commented Michael J. Ballingall, Senior Vice President, Silver Star Ski Resort Ltd. "These were the first freehold single family lots available for sale at Silver Star since 1996. Purchasers from the Okanagan Valley, Vancouver, the lower mainland, Washington State and as far away as the UK and Australia have staked their claim by being one of the successful purchasers of this prestigious piece of Silver Star’s future." continued Ballingall.
Greg Lowe, of Landlaunch Marketing Corp. and Director of Sales for Alpine Meadows said that "the 49 building sites will provide skiers and snowboarders with the best location of ski-in/ski-out homes that will ever be released at Silver Star. Valued at over $14 million, the Alpine Meadows development generated significant interest from local and international guests looking for a special place on Silver Star Mountain to call their own, " continued Lowe.
One of the early purchases was made by Rob Boyd, coach of Canada's women's national downhill ski team, and his wife Sherry. "Silver Star is a great family resort, and Rob's roots run deep in the Vernon area," commented Sherry. Rob's parents, Sandy and Molly, are Silver Star pass holders and Rob's sister Heather is Guest Services manager at the resort. The recent addition of nine-month old Dylan to the Boyd family was definitely a factor. "We love the family atmosphere," Sherry continued, "the skating rink, the tubing park, the village, plus, of course, the prolific powder."
Interest in Alpine Meadows was strong from local buyers and investors as well. The Kray family of Vernon purchased five lots in all. Chad Kray, a local Vernon contractor, said "we really like the close proximity of the resort to Vernon, and the fact that the Okanagan is one of the great places in the world to retire to. Real estate prices have never fallen at Silver Star, and the resort is sure to be a great investment when the Olympics come to British Columbia in 2010."
Alpine Meadows has been much anticipated since the initial announcement almost two years ago and will continue the tradition Silver Star has become world famous for which are their classic Victorian-styled homes, as entrenched in the Official Community Plan. This new neighbourhood will emphasize natural materials, such as timber and stone, as well as a soft colour palette featuring a minimum of three colours.
With the announcement of the sell out of Alpine Meadows, Silver Star Ski Resort Ltd. thrilled the new investors and those in attendance by proclaiming that there will be a brand new chairlift transporting skiers and boarders from their new homes to the top of the Attridge area. This $1.5 million Doppelmayr ‘Unistar’ fixed-grip quad chair will have a capacity of 1,200 people per hour. With 743 metres (2,450 feet ) in length and 229 metres (750 feet) of vertical, the Alpine Meadows Chair will be a quick 5 minute ride to the top and constructed during the summer of 2006, ready for the opening of the 2006-2007 winter season.
Infrastructure for the Alpine Meadows neighbourhood will commence installation at the close of winter operations April 17th, with the first homes scheduled to break ground in the fall of 2006. Alpine Meadows is the second major real estate development for the Schumann family (the first being the highly successful and record breaking Snowbird Lodge) since purchasing the resort in 2001. The family has invested over $54 million in the past five years in property and resort infrastructure including, The Comet, Canada's largest six passenger chairlift, The Powder Gulch, servicing Canada's best backside, Silver Woods, Canada's newest ski area, and upgrades to various guest service and resort amenities.
Silver Star Mountain Resort is located 18 kilometres (12 miles) east of Vernon, BC, and is an hour's drive from Kelowna's International Airport in the north of super natural British Columbia's Okanagan Valley. Silver Star is the third most popular ski and snowboard destination in British Columbia, second only to its sister resort, Big White Ski Resort and North America's number one resort, Whistler/Blackcomb.
