Silver Star continued its quest to help find a cure for cancer this past weekend at the Relay for Life Vernon at Polson Park.
This year Team Silver Star raised more than $7000 for cancer research, making it one of the top fundraising teams at the event. Fundraising efforts occurred throughout the year including a silent auction at Silver Star’s 2nd annual wine tasting event, snowshoe walk fundraising event and all proceeds from the 1st annual chili cook-off. All together the Vernon Relay for Life event raised over $106,000 (and still counting) for cancer survivors and vital research.
Silver Star has been participating in the Relay For Life since 2007 as an event sponsor as well as a participating team. This past weekend Team Silver Star walked roughly 100Km’s collectively around Polson Park oval during the twelve hour relay. This year’s fundraising campaign brings Silver Star’s six year fundraising total to more than $57,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society.
Team Silver Star again hosted a food and beverage concession at the event to help fuel the participants of the walking relay. Supported and supplied by some of Silver Star’s key partners, Pepsi and Sysco and run by the resort chef’s this year’s concession generated $900 revenue which all went to the Relay For Life.
The 2012 Relay For Life had 302 participants and 36 teams in total which is a bit lower than year’s past, however, the event actually raised more money than previous year’s. “It was a great example of how dedicated participants of this event are. Despite being down in the number of fundraisers this group was able to exceed last year’s total” commented Jennifer Dies, the Coordinator for Relay For Life Vernon.
Jennifer also added that the event relies heavily on sponsors like Silver Star, The Morning Star, Sun FM, Nor-Val Rentals, Evolution Audio and Global TV Okanagan and could not be done without their generous support.
Silver Star is already making plans for next year’s event and encourages other companies to take up the challenge of fundraising for Relay For Life. “Cancer touches so many lives and being a part of making a difference for cancer survivors and research means so much to our team” commented Ian Galbraith, summer business manager for Silver Star and team captain. “This is such a unique and humbling experience to be a part of. We’d really like to thank our generous supporters and the tireless volunteers of this event”.
Silver Star would like to thank all the volunteers, planning committee, participants and of course those that donated to the Relay For Life. All your efforts and generosity are greatly appreciated.
